The Sudanese resistance committees have played a decisive role in their country’s recent political trajectory. They mobilized massive protests to push for the fall of the Bashir regime, then led the mobilizations to support the political transition to a civilian leadership and finally led the resistance to the October 2021 military coup. With the eruption of war in April 2023 between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan’s resistance committees face yet another major challenge to adapt and redefine their role.

This webinar, organized in partnership between the Sudanese Center for Policy Studies and the Arab Reform Initiative, will analyze the structure and adaptability of the resistance committees which allowed them to navigate Sudan’s tumultuous period and discuss their role and ability to maneuver in the current war. Focusing on the multiple functions they serve as well as their territorial grounding, the webinar will explore their ability to overcome the current conflict dynamics and reflect on their possible future role. The discussion will reflect on and be guided by a recent research paper by SCPS on the topic.
