2021Webinar From Agareb to Borj Chekir: Waste management in Tunisia, an environmental and political problem
2021
Monday 6 December at 6pm Tunis time.
The discussion will be in Arabic with English interpretation available on Zoom only.
For several weeks, the region of Sfax has been living at the pace of the waste crisis. The closure of the landfill El Gonna in Agareb, decided by the court in 2019 and ratified in late September, has led to a garbage crisis in the city of Sfax. Faced with the discontent in Sfax, the Ministry of the Environment has reopened the landfill. This decision led to demonstrations by residents in Agareb, which were repressed by the police. One protester was reportedly killed after being shot with tear gas. In Greater Tunis, tensions are rising over the postponement of the closure of the Borj Chekir landfill, scheduled for October 2021.
Between corruption, unpreparedness of the State to the legal closure of landfills, indifference to environmental and health issues, exploitation of peripheries by large urban centers and use of force, the management of household waste is a textbook case of poor governance at the central and regional levels.
In this webinar, our speakers will discuss what these two crises reveal about the shortcomings of environmental and political management and the cost this has on the inhabitants.
