This session is part of our ongoing series on Politics of Transition: Syria in Comparative Perspectives, which brings together Syrian and international scholars to examine the key political, social, and institutional challenges shaping Syria’s post-conflict trajectory. The series is a collaboration between APSN and ARI and centers comparative insights and grounded perspectives on transitional governance.
This particular session will focus on transitional justice: how it might be pursued in Syria, and what models, mechanisms, and processes could help meaningfully balance truth, accountability, and long-term stability. The discussion will explore both formal justice processes and grassroots or community-led initiatives, as well as how experiences from other contexts can inform Syria’s path forward.
Key themes may include:
- Truth commissions, criminal accountability, and reparations
- The role of survivors and communities in justice processes
- Risks of instrumentalization or selectivity in transitional justice frameworks
