The Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) is a policy research centre whose key mission is to articulate a homegrown agenda for democratic change in Arab countries. It operates on the principles of impartiality, social justice, gender equality, and diversity. It conducts policy analysis and research, while providing a platform for inspirational voices and empowering young scholars and socially engaged youth. ARI is a hub for a network of Arab think tanks and works in partnership with international institutions. ARI engages academic research centres, think tanks, social movements, decision-makers, media and the public on issues of democratization and political transformation. ARI combines scholarly work and advocacy and produces practical intellectual tools to influence existing political transformation. It promotes sustained exchanges and dialogues on reform across the region and with outside partners.

Job profile

ARI is currently looking for three interns starting June 2023 (for at least 4 months and ideally 6). Interns will work with their respective ARI team/project and will be under the direction of Programme/Project Directors. The internship will combine a variety of skills, including project development, communications, administrative and logistical management, and research. The interns will be remunerated in accordance with ARI’s hiring policies.

Each intern will have a particular focus, with the available options being:

  1. Environmental Politics
  2. Social Media and Communications
  3. Women’s Political Participation and Representation

Responsibilities

Environmental Politics Program (EPP) Intern

Reports to: Sarine Karajerjian, Programme Director

  • Assist with desk research on a variety of topics, including but not limited to the nexus of conflict and the environment, environmental activism and civil society in the region, just transition, solar energy in Lebanon
  • Assist in mapping environmental civil society actors in the MENA region
  • Assist with maintaining an extensive stakeholder database and mapping
  • Assist with the organizations of events, such as webinars, conferences, and consultation meetings. This includes helping with the concept notes, finding adequate participants for the event, assisting with logistics such as invitations and taking meeting minutes during the event.
  • Assist with any communications tasks for events, in cooperation with the Communications Team

Social Media and Communications Intern

Reports to: Serene Dardari, Director of Communications

  • Updates and monitors ARI’s social media accounts and posts content.
  • Analyzes analytics to measure the success of campaigns and content
  • Support the communication team in mapping and compiling potential stakeholders and opportunities relevant to ARI’s scope of work
  • Monitor and track media mentions of ARI
  • Engages with audiences/community members, partners and potential donors. This includes commenting on others’ posts, replying to comments on ARI’s posts and reposting content that ARI is tagged in.
  • Learns and utilizes internal software systems such as Socialbu, Trello and Canva.
  • Able to produce simple graphics on canva or other softwares if needed.
  • Provide recommendations to the Director for improving audience experience on social platforms and internal processes.
  • Coordinates with ARI’s media freelancers and provides logistical support as needed.

Women’s Political Participation and Representation (WPPR) Intern

Reports to: Fatme Masri, Programme Director

  • Contribute to knowledge production on WPPR and assist with research tasks, including conducting literature reviews, identifying experts, and other deliverables as needed.
  • Support the team in mapping institutions and curating a list of formal women’s organizations and informal grassroots feminist movements throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, while also contributing to ARI’s broader stakeholder mapping efforts.
  • Co-develop a variety of high-quality communications material on WPPR for both internal and external audiences, in close collaboration with the ARI communications team.
  • Assist in planning and executing events, such as webinars and conferences, including managing invitations and participation tracking, as well as coordinating overall logistics.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must be able to speak/read/write both English and Arabic to a professional level. Knowledge of French is a plus.
  • Self-motivated and autonomous in the workplace. ARI seeks interns who are able to both create their own work and build their niche within the association.
  • Interns should have demonstrable experience in the field of their desired internship (i.e social media and communications, environmental politics and gender studies).
