The king reiterated his desire to work “for the reconciliation and solidarity between the two countries,” notably on a basis of complementarity and integration, in the message sent on Algeria’s Independence Day.
The message comes after Morocco sent a high-level delegation to Algeria Saturday to extend condolences to Bouteflika after the death of his brother.
Morocco’s 1975 annexation of Western Sahara sparked a war between its forces and Algerian-backed Polisario guerrillas. The two sides agreed to a ceasefire in 1991 but UN-sponsored talks on the territory’s future have since made no headway.
